Levi Jordan
Plantation

THE JOHNSON FAMILY

Cassie Johnson' s husband Darrell is a direct descendant of Jerry Johnson and his father, Dern (Dimmy Doo) Johnson. Dern Johnson came from Africa early in the 19th century, and the Johnson family lived on the Mims Plantation, which was very near the Jordan Plantation. A section of the Johnson family genealogy is attached. It is a fairly big file (35K), and may take a a couple of minutes to download.

Here is a picture of Cassie and Darrell Johnson.

I'm hoping that someone in the Johnson family will have a picture of an ancestor to share here at some point in the future.

by Carol McDavid

Both black and white descendants have told me the story of the relationship between Jerry Johnson (the son of Dimmy Doo Johnson, who came from Africa) and Calvin McNeill (Levi Jordan's grandson). They seem to have been friends and hunting companions, despite the more general tension in the community (and in the South, for that matter) in terms of race and power.

As the story goes, when McNeill's house burned down, Jerry stepped forward and offered financial assistance to rebuild the house. Calvin didn't accept the money, but he did accept Johnson's offer to round up a group of volunteers to clear the burned debris and cart it away.

Apparently one basis for the friendly relationship between the two men was a common interest in raising hunting dogs. In one of the McNeill family account books, we found a copy of a genealogy for Jerry Johnson's hunting dogs! They seem to have sold and traded them back and forth through the years. We're were thinking of putting part of it on this web site – do you think it would be an interesting document to see?
